Ben Gurion University's Tenured Left and Comeuppance

(To right: Anti-Israel BGU's Oren Yiftachel, a leading promoter of the
calumny about Israel being "apartheid" state.)

Well, what goes around certainly comes around.

As you know, Ben Gurion University faculty members are among the
world's worst promoters of the false calumny that Israel is an
"apartheid" regime. These are people who know perfectly well that
Israel is the only country in the Middle East that is NOT an apartheid
regime. Meanwhile, the university president, rector, and dean of
social sciences are all leading the campaign to defend these tenured
traitors and to denounce as "McCarthyists" those who dare to criticize
the Ben Gurion University academic fifth column, demanding that the
critics of the traitors be silenced.

But now along comes the sweetest story of comeuppance the country has
ever seen. A university in South Africa that used to be one of the
main bastions of South African racism and apartheid is voting this
week on a proposal to boycott and apply sanctions against the very
same Ben Gurion University. For being part of Israeli "apartheid," of
course. And where did the South African anti-Semites hear that Israel
is an apartheid regime? From anti-Israel BGU faculty members, of
course.

Ben Gurion University long ago gave up its pretenses of having any
real academic standards, at least with regard to most of the
departments in the social sciences and humanities, and even of being a
bona fide institution of higher learning. At Ben Gurion University,
denouncing Israel as a fascist racist terrorist entity is not only a
sufficient condition to get yourself hired and promoted as a faculty
member, in some departments it is a necessary condition as well.

I must say that I am simply delighted at the thought of South Africans
boycotting Ben Gurion University and I think we should all encourage
the South Africans to go ahead with their plans for BDS ( = Boycott,
Divestment, Sanctions) against the tenured Left that controls and runs
(into the ground) Ben Gurion University. I think we should all follow
their lead!

Here is the whole report:

South Africa May Ban Ben Gurion U. Anti-Pollution Project
Tishrei 20, 5771, 28 September 10 09:20
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
(Israelnationalnews.com) Israel's Ben Gurion University is worried
that a South African university may stop a joint project designed to
solve Johannesburg water pollution.
The University of Johannesburg's senate is scheduled to vote Wednesday
on a petition signed by Nobel Prize winner Desmond Tutu and 200
government officials and academics who want to cut off ties with the
Israeli university because of the presence of Jews in Judea and
Samaria.
"Israeli universities are an intimate part of the Israeli regime by
active choice," Tutu wrote in a South African newspaper this week.
"While Palestinians are not able to access universities and schools,
Israeli universities produce the research, technology, arguments and
leaders for maintaining the occupation."
He accused Ben Gurion University of "maintaining links to both the
Israeli defense forces and the arms industry," and he wrote that it
"structurally supports and facilitates the Israeli occupation. For
example, BGU offers a fast-tracked program of training to Israeli Air
Force pilots."
Ironically, Ben Gurion University has been headed by two presidents
who became Labor party Knesset Members and are outspokenly in favor of
expelling most Jews from Judea and Samaria and creating a Palestinian
Authority state in their place. The university is also a hotbed for
left-wing and Bedouin activists whose views are non-Zionist.
The Be'er Sheva-based university said is it "disturbed" by the
campaign to cancel a research agreement to collaborate on
biotechnology and water purification. It pointed out that then-South
African President Nelson Mandela in 1997 received an honorary
doctorate from Ben-Gurion University and that he "applauded the
university's accomplishments" in his acceptance speech.
"We have a center of excellence which represents the best in the
traditions of the Jewish people: a sense of mission, internationalism
and inventiveness," Ben Gurion officials said in a statement. "The
joint research project is designed to solve real problems of water
contamination in a reservoir near Johannesburg and as such is for the
direct benefit of the residents of the region. BGU sees this joint
project as an opportunity to make its well-reputed expertise in water
research available to improve the welfare of the South African people.
"Those opposed to this collaboration accuse BGU of 'abusing academic
freedom, abusing human rights and being an accomplice to an Apartheid
government system in Israel.' These accusations – and others made in
their statements -- are totally false and based upon ignorance and
prejudice."

Two stories of Leftwing Fascism on Campus

1. Two stories of Leftwing Fascism on Campus:

At the Hebrew University:
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/news.aspx/134972

Hebrew U. Leftists Link Nationalists with KKK and Hitler
Kislev 26, 5770, 13 December 09 11:44
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
(Israelnationalnews.com) Zionist activists on the Hebrew University
campuses in Jerusalem face daily harassment from leftists, some of
whom label them as being like Hitler and the American racist Ku Klux
Klan group, according to student Amit Barak.
Deputy chairman of the nationalist Im Tirztu [If you Wish It] group,
Barak told Arutz 7 that leftist students on both of the university's
campuses in the capital use Nazi symbols and catcalls of 'fascists"
against his group.
"Several days ago, one of our activists who was walking with our
newspaper was met by a student raising his hand" in a manner similar
to the Hitler salute, he continued. The student was identified as a
Meretz supporter. Barak said he complained to the three MKs of the
Meretz party about the slurs, but MK Chaim Oron was the only who
deplored the behavior. Party chairman MK Ilan Gil'on and MK Nitzan
Horowitz ignored him.
Barak has appealed to Knesset Education Committee chairman Zevulun
Orlev (Jewish Home) to hold a special hearing on the harassment, He
also has complained to the university administration, but no reply has
been received.
The student nationalists cited another example of a student newspaper
caricature comparing Im Tirtzu with the Ku Klux Klan.
Barak said that at the end of one university media lecture, Im Tirtzu
leader Erez Tadmor's stand on the expulsion of Jews from their homes
was met by one student who suggested that he add "Heil Hitler" to his
statements. When Tadmor replied, the lecturer admonished him while
ignoring the other student's comment.
One student cell that is identified with the Labor party published a
satire linking Im Tirtzu with the Nazi Sieg Heil victory slogan.

Harvard students protest New Republic editor
Demonstrators confront Marty Peretz in Cambridge with signs quoting
his own words about Arabs and African-Americans Video
By Justin Elliott

A woman at the protest targeting New Republic editor-in-chief Marty
Peretz. (How dare Peretz tell the truth!!)
At an event on Saturday in Cambridge, Harvard University accepted a
new research fund in honor of New Republic editor-in-chief and former
Harvard teacher Marty Peretz (full back story here).
A sizable group of students upset by Peretz's writings over the years
-- most recently his assertion that Muslim life is cheap and that
followers of Islam should not be protected by the First Amendment, for
which he later partially apologized -- was on hand to protest Peretz
and the university.
Usefully, the protesters carried signs quoting Peretz's own words as
they followed him and his entourage through Harvard Yard.
Here is the must-see video of the protest:
Here is James Fallows' take on why what happened today was an
acceptable outcome.
And here is the press release put out by the protest organizers:
CAMBRIDGE, Sept. 25—Over 100 members of the Harvard community and
others "welcomed" New Republic editor and the university
administration's favorite racist, Martin Peretz, at the 50th
anniversary of Harvard's Social Studies program with a combination of
protests, walk-outs, and probing questions.
Demonstrators at the event confronted Peretz outside Harvard's Science
Center—which was held in part to launch a $650,000 research fund in
his name—and followed him for several minutes while chanting slogans
rejecting his racist stances.
"Just because President Faust wants to honor a longtime public bigot
doesn't mean that the Harvard community does," said senior Abdelnasser
Rashid, a social studies concentrator. "We've billed this
demonstration as a 'Party for Marty' to show how absurd Harvard's
decision to celebrate Peretz is."
Peretz attempted to sneak out of the Science Center's back entrance
around noontime but was quickly spotted and surrounded by Harvard
students chanting "Harvard University will not stand bigotry" and
"Harvard Harvard shame on you, for honoring a racist fool" as he
walked aross campus.
The protest continued outside of the Adams House dining hall, where
Peretz was honored at a Social Studies luncheon. During his talk,
around 10 faculty and staff walked out in protest.
"It's Marty's party and he can cry if he wants to," said Maryam
Monalisa Gharavi, a graduate student in comparative literature. "But
the rest of us are here to remind him that we're not going to stand by
while the Harvard administration overlooks his 25-year career in
spewing hatred and bigotry. He has a right to free speech, not a right
to be honored."
Protesters had gathered in the morning outside the Science Center,
brandishing signs with some of Peretz' most memorable quotes from his
long career of spouting racism. Peretz has described "Arab society" as
"hidebound and backward"; declared that "many in the black population
are afflicted by cultural deficiencies"; and described Latin American
societies as "congenitally corrupt" with "near-tropical work habits."
Peretz was roundly criticized during the Social Studies celebration
itself. During the event's morning panel, Berkeley economist Brad
DeLong cited Peretz's recent statements about Muslims and argued that
the only "appropriate response" was "What the frackity frack is going
on here?"
During the afternoon panel, several Social Studies alumni and current
students challenged Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne, former
deputy attorney general Jamie Gorelick and Princeton professor Michael
Walzer over their support for the Peretz Fund during a question and
answer period. Students remarked on the irony of the session's title,
"Social Studies and Social change," and asked the panelists how they
managed to overlook a career of bigotry spanning decades.
The demonstrators joined the over 600 people, nearly all Harvard
affiliates or alumni, who signed an open letter this week calling upon
Harvard to reverse its decision to honor Peretz and establish a fund
in his name. Separately, several Harvard student groups representing
Arab, African-American, Muslim, and Latino students jointly signed
letters condemning the decision to honor Peretz.
Harvard administrators have cited Peretz' recent attempt to apologize
for a few of his most recent remarks after they drew nationwide
condemnation; but these half-hearted and belated remarks do not
address the many racist statements he has made over the past few
decades.
"The Harvard administration has no right to accept to absolve Martin
Peretz of his racism on behalf of students of color and others who
oppose racism," Rashid said.

2. With Stalinist Anti-Semitism at Tel Aviv University

Shlomo Sand, the Stalinist history professor from Tel Aviv University
with expertise on the French cinema is the guy who discovered that
Jews are not a people at all and that Israeli Jews are converted
Khazar intelopers, in his book that recycles Neo-Nazi myths. Now on
the pages of Haaretz he discovers also that Jews cannot be democratic:
http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/a-jewish-state-or-an-israeli-democracy-1.315725
Perhaps the best segment of this learned essay is this: "Strange, I
didn't know you could only join a people via religious conversion and
not by taking part in its day-to-day culture. But perhaps there's a
secular Jewish people-culture I'm not aware of? Maybe Woody Allen,
Philip Roth and others are secretly well-versed in the Hebrew
language, cinema, literature and theater? For me, the best definition
of belonging to a people is the ability to recognize the name of at
least one soccer team competing in the local leagues."

SO this professor of history, who published a book about Jewish
history that only French people read, did not know that one joins some
peoples, like Jews, by accepting their religion. The real mystery of
course, is how he ever got hired by TA in the first place.

A Counter-BDS Program from Succot

1.  I have been trying to come up with a good response to the BDS
(Boycott, Divest, Sanctions) Neo-Nazis who are leading the war of
economic terrorism against Israel.  Then I discovered in the Haftara
portion for the first day of Succot that there already is a ready-made
counter-BDS program, one we had not noticed:

So here is a contemporary commentary on the attempt by the
anti-Semites to boycott Israel and what should be done with them:

"And they will dwell therein (the Jews living in Jerusalem) and there
will not be any boycott (cherem) any longer, for Jerusalem will be
safely inhabited.  While this shall be the plague with which the Lord
smites all the nations who besiege Jerusalem: their flesh will waste
away while they still stand on their feet; their eyes will waste away
in their sockets, and their tongue will waste away in their mouths."

Zechariah 14:  11-12

2.  The Succot of 2009 predicted in the Succot of 2002

Tishrei 17, 5763, 23 September 02 11:49

by Steven Plaut

It was a bright, sunny day in the summer of 2009.

It was in that period when the monthly death toll from Oslo passed its
1100 mark. The four remaining Knesset Members of the Israeli Labor
Party were calling for more goodwill gestures by Israel and
concessions to the PLO. Meretz and Peace Now were demanding that
Israel seriously consider the latest peace offer from the Palestinians
to convert Israel into a web site. Meanwhile, the Americans were
demanding that Israel exercise self-restraint after the latest bus
bombings. The State Department had just floated a new diplomatic
compromise proposal that would involve running the border separating
Israel from Palestine down Shenkin Street in Tel Aviv.

And it was right after the 1000th Israeli bus was blown to pieces by a
Palestinian suicide bomber. The bomber of that 1000th bus had come
from the West Bank town of Tul Karem, as the standard videotape of his
bravado broadcast on Palestine Television showed.

Only three hours after the 1000th bus exploded, 14 well-placed car
bombs in Tul Karem exploded in unison. There were dozens of
casualties. The death toll from these car bombs reached 49, nearly
half of whom were not wanted terrorists.

Later that day, a mysterious message was passed on to the BBC's
Palestine news desk operating out of Jaffa. The message claimed a
group calling itself the 'Triple T,' shorthand for the 'Terrorize the
Terrorists' organization, had placed the car bombs there.

The news of the car bombings aroused immediate fury from everywhere
around the world. The Americans denounced this horrific terrorism as
serving as an obstacle to striking a peace deal between Israel and the
PLO, one that was just around the corner. The Israeli government
insisted it had no knowledge of the perpetrators of the bombings, but
did not rule out that they were PLO car bombs meant for Israel that
had simply exploded prematurely, and in any case promised to run its
own investigation. The PLO and its affiliates in Palestine issued
their usual shrieking oaths of vengeance.

For ten days, a tense tranquility prevailed. On the 11th day, a
Palestinian suicide bomber tried to blow himself up on a Haifa bus,
but fortunately the fuse fizzled and the bomb did not go off. Under
questioning by the police, it turned out that the would-be bomber came
from Nablus. Three hours later central Nablus was shaken by a series
of huge explosions. Large bombs that had been planted in garbage
containers destroyed the entire market area. The carnage was almost as
large as the earlier bombings of Tul Karem.

And once again, the mysterious Triple T organization took credit for
the blasts. The State Department demanded that Israel take action and
find the terrorists responsible for the blasts in Tul Karem and Nablus
or face sanctions.

In the coming weeks, hundreds of incidents of sniping and shooting at
Jews were recorded in the West Bank and Gaza, but -strangely - none of
these occurred in Tul Karem or Nablus themselves. In those two towns,
the Hamas organized protest marches to demand that Tel Aviv be blown
to bits in revenge, but no acts of terrorism were initiated from their
environs.

Two weeks after the Nablus bombings, the Hamas organized its largest
mass rally ever in fields outside of Gaza City. In the midst of the
rally, when the Sheikh who leads the Hamas began to speak, the entire
field in which the rally was being held exploded in a ball of flame.
The fireball was so large that it was visible from space, as
photographed by a passing satellite. Body parts were found as far as
half a mile away. The scene was horrific. The entire Gaza leadership
of the Hamas sitting on the podium was annihilated, and hundreds of
rank and file Hamas members were badly injured.

And again the shadowy Triple T organization took credit. The Israeli
cabinet sent out police patrols to locate the perpetrators of these
outrages. The Knesset denounced the 3T terrorists and expressed
sympathy or the families of the Palestinian injured.

After the Gaza explosion, once again a tense period of tranquility
lasting several months transpired. When the Palestinian shootings and
snipings reignited later that spring, they were noticeably less
intense than previously. But, more significantly, after many cases of
snipings at Jews, bombs would almost immediately go off in the
Palestinian villages closest to the scene of the shootings or in those
from which the snipers had emerged.

By the following summer, the rate of Palestinian snipings had dwindled
to a trickle. Far more important was the fact that during the entire
summer not a single Israeli bus was attacked.

While the bombings of Palestinians by the Triple T appeared to have
slowed, they did not stop altogether. Various Palestinian figures were
blown to pieces when they started their cars or answered their cell
phones. Curiously, these included many of the Palestinians who served
as spokesmen for the Tanzim and other terror organizations, people
whom the world was accustomed to watching on TV denouncing the Jews.
The assassination of the spokeswoman for the Tanzim was particularly
gruesome.

The Americans were still livid at the 3T violations of Palestinian
human rights. Israel's government insisted it was doing everything it
could to discover the identities of the Triple T terrorists and to
apprehend their leaders and members. The Triple T appeared to be too
slick and well organized to be easily tracked down.

The level of Palestinian violence in 2010 was far lower than it had
been the previous summer. It had not dropped to zero, and the bombings
of Palestinian markets, cars, and offices after Palestinian-initiated
violent incidents continued. When gunmen opened fire on the Jerusalem
neighborhood of Gilo, the nearby town of Beit Jala was almost leveled
in the largest explosion yet claimed by Triple T. It took weeks to
clear the rubble.

Meanwhile, other important political changes were taking place.
Statisticians noted that while the Palestinian death toll from the
Triple T blasts was tragic, and indeed had passed the 410 mark, it
appeared that if one were to extrapolate the Jewish death toll from
the previous summer, and compare what its trend had been to the
numbers actually killed in the past year by Palestinian terrorists,
for every Palestinian death 12 Jewish deaths had been prevented!! And
even that number was based on the full year; in the last quarter of
the year by itself the ratio of saved to killed was 60 to 1.

But not all was tranquil. From the Israeli Arab city of Umm al-Fahm
there emerged a team of suicide bombers who exploded themselves in
downtown Afula, killing many passersby. Three weeks later the Islamic
fundamentalist movement held a mass rally in the Umm al-Fahm stadium,
under banners declaring that the Jews were threatening the al-Aqsa
Mosque, and showing their solidarity with the Palestinian victims of
Triple T.

The film crews caught the explosion on live camera. The grounds of the
entire stadium had been mined and turned into a huge fireball. The
injured lay everywhere and 18 were dead.

For the next 29 months, there did not occur a single bus bombing and
the number of shooting incidents over this entire period in the entire
West Bank and Gaza Strip was reduced to a handful. After the last
Triple T explosion, a large emigration had begun from Umm al-Fahm and
from the West Bank. It was estimated that in many West Bank towns as
much as a third of the population had simply left and moved elsewhere,
overseas. From Tul Karem the numbers were closer to two thirds. Some
Israeli Arab towns and villages within the Green Line lost as much as
a third of their populations as well.

All of the Israeli Arab Knesset Members from the PLO-surrogate parties
and from the communist party had resigned from the parliament
following the Umm al-Fahm massacre. For the next two years, there were
no Arab members of the Knesset.

But three years after the first Triple T explosion, a group of Israeli
Arab intellectuals established the Arab Zionist Party. Its basic
platform was denunciation of all Palestinian claims to sovereignty,
denunciation of all violence, loyalty to the state of Israel, and
encouraging of Israeli Arabs to serve in the Israeli Defense Forces.
In its first election contest, the party won 3 seats. In its second
contest four years later, it won 13 seats, making it the third largest
party in the Knesset, following the Ichud Leumi and the National
Religious Party (led by the Prime Minister). The AZP initiated a
series of proposals for affirmative action preferences that benefit
Jews, to compensate them for their historic victimization by Arabs
over decades.

Changes were also visible across the Green Line. In some Palestinian
villages, local vigilante squads rounded up wanted terrorists and
delivered them to Israeli army and police stations, occasionally
lynching them beforehand. Large posters showing the pilots who had
bombed Bin Laden's underground hiding place to smithereens appeared on
Palestinian billboards as local heroes. In some places, posters of the
two Ghandis - Mohatma and Rehavam, could be seen under the slogan "Our
Martyrs". Palestinian schools underwent a remarkable change in
curriculum. They now emphasized the moral right of Israel to exist and
instructed all Palestinians who were uncomfortable living under the
democratic rule of the Jewish majority to move to Detroit or to Kuwait
or to New Zealand.

A new Palestinian militia arose based in Bethlehem, dedicated to
collaborating with the Israeli police and to patrolling the
Palestinian streets and arresting anyone promoting violence against
Jews. The militia later fielded candidates for mayors of West Bank
towns and won about two thirds of all those contested.

Teams of Palestinians prayed at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and on leaving
their prayers they rushed to the gates to invite Jews to join them in
praying for peace on the Temple Mount. Groups of Palestinians asked to
come to Jewish homes on Jewish holidays to pay their respects and to
bring gifts. Among the Palestinians, there was a religious
transformation. New pacifist and quietist sects of Moslem Sufis gained
popularity. Small numbers of Palestinians converted to Buddhism.
Thousands of Palestinians volunteered to serve in the Peace Corps and
other volunteer organizations promoting non-violence overseas. Others
volunteered to fight in squadrons of American and British military
units tracking down Islamist terrorists in other countries. Many
Palestinians named their children Schwartzkopf, in honor of the
general who had attacked Iraq.

Israel also underwent a political transformation. Israeli universities
became the centers for the new movement of Post-Post-Zionism, and
groups of rowdy students tarred and feathered campus professors who
had once supported Oslo. The Jewish History and Bible departments at
the universities had to move to larger facilities. Synagogues
throughout the country were filled to overflowing. The brand new
Museum of Folly, documenting the Oslo years, was now the most popular
stop for tourists and Israeli schoolchildren in Jerusalem.

While thousands of Palestinians petitioned to be annexed by Israel and
made full citizens subject to military conscription, the government of
Israel decided to put off the question for now. Meanwhile the
out-migration of Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza continued,
with expatriates selling their homes to some of the 1.5 million Jewish
immigrants that had flooded into the country in the past 3 years.
Delegations of Jordanian Arabs from the northwestern areas of Jordan,
opposite Beit Shean, submitted petitions to the Israeli government to
be annexed. Several even offered to convert to Judaism if their homes
could be annexed. Israeli flags were raised along the Jordanian side
of the Jordan River. The BBC and CNN started showing the Bashan region
of Jordan on their maps as Occupied Israeli territory. Along the
eastern bank of the Jordan River, choirs of Arab school children
chanted, "How Good are Your Tents Oh Jacob", like Bil'am in the Bible.

The Israeli economy was booming. A new wing was added to the Museum of
Folly to describe the decades of Israeli socialism long since ended,
documented for disbelieving school children. A wave of new Hebrew
literature, film and drama started the world-wide "Israel Wave".
Almost the entire Jewish population of California moved to Israel in
order to enjoy the living standards so much higher there. The bankrupt
publishers of Haaretz newspaper sold out to new owners, and the new
editors made little attempt to hide their admiration for the 3T
guerillas. Tikkun Magazine changed its name to Triple T (ikkun), to
show its solidarity with the underground. All of France was paralyzed
in the annual Honor the Jews parades, organized in large part by
Palestinian emigres. The rest of the EU countries sent contingents.

Interpol is still hunting the shadowy Triple T organization. Its
criminal members were never apprehended.

The nations of the world now send delegations to Jerusalem to join in
the Succot celebrations, as the Prophet predicted.

Adjectives

1.  I usually avoid mentioning Benny Zipper in my postings because he is such a pathetic Quisling that he makes the other writers for Haaretz look like serious patriotic thinkers.  Zipper is the one Haaretz columnist who is even more enthusiastically pro-auto-annihilation for Israel than Gideon Levy.  A half-witted subliterate, Zipper nevertheless utilizes his space at Haaretz to promote Israel's destruction.  (Here are Zipper's comments on an Italian Holocaust Denial blog:  http://peacepalestine.blogspot.com/2006/08/benny-zipper-kfar-qana-as-oy-oy-oy.html )

But now Zipper has an even better idea.  He lays it out in the monthly Yakinton (meaning Hyacinth), a German-language magazine that has been coming out since 1932 serving German Jews living in Israel.  In his article, cited at length in Hebrew in Makor Rishon, which ran there just before Rosh Hashana, Zipper outlines his plan for the peaceful future.  He proposes that a new secularist leftist Jewish cultural center be established in Berlin, one that will battle against reactionary religiosity and fascism, by which he means Israel and Zionism.  He argues that Israel will not serve in the future as the cultural heart of Jewry because it is so sunken into its obsession with blood and materialism.  Hence, it only makes sense that Berlin emerge as the true center of progressive secularist Jewry.

In the article he cites approvingly his own father, a German Jew, who disliked the Ashkenazi Jews from Russia and Poland and Eastern Europe, the "Ostjuden," and regarded them as violent and primitive.  This is all a bit amusing; yes, it is true that 100 or so years ago some German Jews looked down their noses at Eastern European Jews, not only in Germany but also in the US.  Some of the better known American Jewish institutions were set up in the 19th century by German Jews to try to teach the primitive Yiddish speaking newcomers from the Pale how to comport themselves in the New World.  Be that as it may, for the Zipper, the snooty dislike for Yiddish speaking Jews is his "literary" way to express his own contempt for Zionists and Orthodox Jews.  Zipper is the Israeli Helen Thomas, who wants to send all the Jews back to Berlin from occupied Palestine.  You can imagine the fate he wishes to unzip for Israeli Jews.

This story would probably not be newsworthy except for the response to Zipper's nonsense from Prof. Yehouda Bauer.  He is one of Israel's best-known academics and intellectuals.  He is a world-class historian of the Holocaust.  No one would ever confuse Bauer for a non-leftist.  His scholarship and his leftism won for him the Israel Prize and numerous other awards.  When asked what he makes about the Zippie's new proposal, Bauer dismissed Zipper as a "leftist fascist" and as "anti-Jewish."

Now I have long been using the term "leftwing fascist" to describe Israel's radical Left and especially the leftists who are battling against freedom of speech in Israel for non-leftists.  But when I use the term, no one thinks it extraordinary or newsworthy.  When Prof. Bauer dismisses the Haaretz writer with the Ziplock brain as a leftwing fascist, you know that progress is being made.

2.  You may remember the moans and screams when the Im Tirtzu students called Naomi Hazan, the chief of the New Israel Fund, names.  They also showed her in an unflattering poster with a rhino horn on her forehead.  You also may recall the self-righteous peacocking of the Left and its "intellectual" amen chorus whenever anyone uses a derogatory adjective to refer to leftist anti-Zionist Israeli academics.  Sure, you can disagree with Neve Gordon and Ilan Pappe, they bellow, just do not ever ever ever refer to them as traitors!!

Well, all this self-righteous posturing by the Caring Left over the uses of adjectives has never extended to any shock or dismay when it comes to the adjectives used by the Left to smear and demonize non-leftists.  We will not recycle here the endless list of Der Sturmer-like rhetoric coming from the Far Left when it comes to non-leftists.  Settlers and Orthodox Jews earn their special venom.  One could take old articles from Der Sturmer and replace the word "Jew" for "settler" and you would have a pretty good sample of what the Left and its captive media have to say.  Arieh Stav once collected a set of these, but it is in Hebrew.

The best and most recent illustration of the rhetorical atrocities coming from the radical Left involves Yehoshua (or Joshua) Sobol.  He is a far-Leftist playwright, the theatrical analogue in Israel to David Grossman.  He has written and staged plays about Palestinians and promoting the Palestinian "narrative."   Many of these have been staged at the Haifa Municipal Theater and they explain why the last time I spent money going to see any plays at that theater was when Ronald Reagan was still president.

Sobol is now back and denouncing "settlers" as "ticks."  Not the clock type but the Lime Disease sort.  He also calls them "metastases."   Those are his exact words.  It is part of his throwing his support behind the Leftists in Israel and abroad boycotting the Ariel University for being positioned on the correct side of Israel's pre-1967 Green Line.  (Those moonbats have now been joined by Frank Gehry, the super-architect, and a host of Hollywood airheads.)

But Sobol's Sturmer-like imagery has now cost him a job.  He was on the teaching staff for the Maale Film School in Jerusalem (see http://www.maale.co.il/default.asp?PageID=66) .  The school, which I believe is funded by the Israeli taxpayer, claimed it was feeling pressure to cut its ties with Sobol the same way one pulls a Connecticut tick off one's scalp.

Meanwhile, get ready and get set for the new screams from the anti-democratic Left about "McCarthyism" and fascism.  Sobol calling people ticks is simply progressive exercise of freedom of speech, but denouncing him for doing so is incitement and fascism.

3.  Bill Clinton took a few moments off from his pursuit of interns in order to smear Russian Jews.  Seems that old Bubba is upset because Russian Jews are opposed to the program for peace through appeasement and capitulation that the Israeli Left and its overseas supporters want to impose.  That, in the mind of Bill the ex Borgia-President, makes them an obstacle to peace.  See http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3958611,00.html

What Freedom Of Speech? (At Ben Gurion University - none!)

http://www.jewishpress.com/pageroute.do/45334

What Freedom Of Speech?

By: Steven Plaut

Date: Tuesday, September 21 2010

The latest headliner in the campaign to silence critics of Israel's radical Left is Prof. Zvi Hacohen, the new rector at Ben Gurion University. A professor in chemistry and "desert research," Hacohen was cited at length in Haaretz (Sept. 15) denouncing people, especially students of the Zionist Im Tirtzu movement, who dare criticize leftist sedition.

Hacohen calls all such critics of anti-Israel extremism "McCarthyists." Leftists denouncing Israel as a Nazi country, a fascist apartheid entity in need of obliteration, are simply exercising their legitimate academic freedom, but anyone who denounces those leftists for what they say and do is guilty of "McCarthyism" and so must be suppressed.

Radical leftist academics who call for a world boycott of Israel are engaging in legitimate use of academic freedom, they insist, but others who call for boycotts of such boycotters of Israel are fascists and guilty of "incitement."

Hacohen denounces students at his own university and others (I assume he means the www.Isracampus.org.il  watchdog group, Israel's equivalent to Campus Watch in the U.S.) for recording the public lectures of radical anti-Israel faculty members and then making them public. He also is upset when they cite verbatim the seditious public pronouncements of those faculty members. Hacohen insists it's McCarthyism to protest the anti-Israel indoctrination that is the main (if not the sole) activity of the Department of Politics at Ben Gurion University, and he denounces students from Im Tirtzu for calling on donors to place their contributions to the university into escrow until the university makes needed reforms.

Hacohen is just one of Israel's many increasingly hysterical radical leftists inside (and outside) academia who demand that freedom of speech for non-leftists be suppressed.

Leftists in Israel are free to endorse violence, to call for Israel to be destroyed, and to endorse anti-Semites and terrorists. They are free to promote lawbreaking and violence. They are free to call on the world to boycott Israel and to impose upon Israel by force an outside "resolution" of the conflict along lines the vast majority of Israelis oppose.

Yes, it may be upsetting to people, say the leftist poseurs, but offensive speech needs to be protected in the name of democracy.

Or does it? A young Jewish woman named Tanya Susskind drew a protest poster of the Prophet Muhammad as a pig. Her drawing was distasteful, but no worse than those Danish cartoons that were judged to be protected speech. She was sentenced to more than two years in prison. Israeli soldiers who recently had their photographs taken alongside handcuffed or blindfolded suspected terrorists have been prosecuted for insensitivity. Why was their behavior not considered protected freedom of expression?

In a similar manner, Israel has criminalized and banned the various Kahanist factions of followers of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane. They are denied freedom of speech under Israel's silly "anti-racism law," a law that has never been used to prosecute a single anti-Semite. Their crime? They express political opinions Israeli leftists find repulsive.

A professor at the University of Haifa was ordered by the Attorney General's Office to report to the police for interrogation concerning things he was accused of saying about Arabs in class - statements he denies having made. But even if he had said negative things about Arabs, why was that not protected speech? Is protected speech in Israel limited to the rights of anti-Semites and traitors to smear Jews?

Just what happened to the idea that freedom of speech protects unpopular and even offensive opinions? Leftists expressing anti-Semitic or anti-Israel radical ideas are never prosecuted in Israel. The most the government ever did was deny entry into Israel to a few foreign leftist professors who had been maintaining intimate association with terrorist organizations like Hizbullah.

Let us go back to Prof. Hacohen, the rector. We know what upsets him, but what does not upset him? He is not disturbed that entire departments at his own university operate as open anti-Israel indoctrination camps. He is not disturbed that faculty members at Ben Gurion University are leaders in the international campaign to boycott Israel, to "divest" from Israel, to place sanctions against Israel. He is not disturbed about BGU faculty members who associate with Holocaust deniers.

Prof. Hacohen is not concerned about reports of leftist faculty members at BGU harassing and penalizing students there who dare dissent from the anti-Israel ideology poured out in classroom indoctrinations. He is not concerned that anti-Israel radicals are being hired and promoted on the basis of "academic records" consisting of nothing more than anti-Israel hate propaganda. He is not concerned about BGU faculty members who endorse terrorist violence. He is not concerned about Arab and Jewish leftist students marching about his campus giving Heil Hitler salutes.  He is not concerned that his university fired a professor who dared to express a politically incorrect opinion about children being raised by homosexuals, in an act of anti-democratic hubris.

The only thing he seems worried about is that some Zionist students at BGU wish to express their opinions and criticize treasonous behavior. He demands that they be silenced. He insults the students at his own university, calling them "McCarthyists." He demands that criticism of treason be silenced in the name of protecting academic freedom.

Ben Gurion University Rector joins that Anti-Democratic Feeding Frenzy

http://thejewishpress.blogspot.com/2010/09/ben-gurion-university-rector-joins-that.html

Ben Gurion University Rector joins that Anti-Democratic Feeding Frenzy

Ben Gurion University continues to lead the jihad in Israel against freedom of speech for non-leftists.  The latest recruit to the campaign to silence critics of Israel's radical Left is Zvi Hacohen, the new Rector at Ben Gurion University.   Hacohen, a professor in chemistry and "desert research," is cited at length in Haaretz Sept 15, 2010 as denouncing people, including and especially the students from the Zionist Im Tirtzu movement, who dare to criticize leftist sedition.

Hecohen calls all such critics "McCarthyists."   Leftists denouncing Israel as a Nazi apartheid entity in need of obliteration are simply exercising legitimately their academic freedom and freedom of speech, but anyone who denounces those same people for what they say and do is guilty of "McCarthyism" and so must be suppressed.

Hacohen denounces students and others (I assume he means Isracampus) for recording the public lectures of radical anti-Israel faculty members and then making them public or citing the seditious pronouncements made publicly by the faculty member.   He insists that it is McCarthyism to protest the anti-Israel indoctrination that is the main (if not the sole) activity of the Department of Politics at Ben Gurion University, and he denounces Im Tirtzu for calling upon donors to place their contributions to the university into escrow until the university makes needed reforms.

He adds, "Some faculty members have even gotten death threats."   The "some faculty" he refers to consists of Neve Gordon, and the "death threat" in question was an anonymous note that Gordon claims he got and that he may have invented or fabricated himself.   I earlier posted reasons why Gordon's claims about the note are suspect, including the fact that Gordon had an earlier track record of brazen lying to the police about getting threats.

So let us back up a bit here.  Prof. Zvi Hacohen, Rector of Ben Gurion University, is not disturbed at all that entire departments at his university operate as open anti-Israel indoctrination camps, where Zionist academics are prohibited from teaching.  He is not disturbed that faculty members at Ben Gurion University are leading the world campaign to destroy Israel, to boycott Israel, to "divest" from Israel, to place sanctions against Israel.  He is not disturbed at all about BGU faculty members who are openly anti-Semitic and who collaborate with Holocaust Deniers.  He is not concerned that Neve Gordon exploits his position at BGU to publish anti-Israel articles in the Iranian government newspaper and for Aljazeera and Al-Ahram, and that Gordon's articles appear on Neo-Nazi and Holocaust Denial web sites.  Hacohen is NOT concerned about the reports of leftist faculty members at BGU harassing and penalizing students who dare to dissent from their anti-Israel ideology.  He is NOT concerned that academic standards in many parts of BGU have simply been trashed and that anti-Israel radicals are being hired and promoted there on the basis of "academic records" consisting of nothing more than anti-Israel hate propaganda.  He is not concerned about lawbreaking by faculty members.  He is not concerned that Ben Gurion University is increasingly regarded as an academic joke and as the "Bir Zeit of the Negev."  He is not concerned that Neve Gordon filed an anti-democratic SLAPP suit to harass and silence another faculty member who dared to criticize Gordon's opinions and public political behavior.  He is not concerned about the BGU faculty who openly endorse terrorist violence, who openly call for Israel's annihilation.   He has no interest in the campaigns by his own faculty members to silence freedom of speech and to stifle Israeli democracy.  He is not disturbed by leftist and Arab students marching about campus giving Heil Hitler salutes.

So about what is he concerned?  He is concerned that some Zionist students at BGU express their opinions.  He demands that they be silenced.  He bullies and insults the students at his own university, calling them "McCarthyists."   He demands that criticism of treason be silenced in the name of protecting academic freedom.

The academic freedom of which he dreams is the sort to be found in North Korea.

Leftist Dreams of Annihilating Israel getting clobbered by Israeli Judaism

1.  In spite of the nonstop efforts of Israel's media, operating under the hegemony of the Israeli secularist Left, Israelis are in fact more religious than ever.  Almost 60% of Israeli Jews define themselves as religious to one extent or another.  Of the 42% claiming to be secularist, large chunks still observe important religious traditions, like fasting on Yom Kippur, building a succah, and so on.   Quite a few sometimes go to synagogue.   There are more Jews who claim they are becoming more religious than the number claiming they are getting less religious.

Now these numbers will no doubt upset the Radical Left.  After all, with so many people embracing Judaism, how in the world will they ever manage to get Israelis to commit national seppuka and capitulate to all the demands of the Arab Islamofascists!?

The Full poll results follow:

Poll: Fewer than half of Israelis see themselves as secular

8% of Jewish Israeli adults define themselves as ultra-Orthodox, 12% as religious, 13% as traditional-religious, and 25% as traditional but 'not very religious,' according to Central Bureau of Statistics survey.

By Moti Bassok

Eight percent of Jewish Israeli adults define themselves as ultra-Orthodox, 12 percent as religious, 13 percent as traditional-religious, and 25 percent as traditional but "not very religious," according to a survey by the Central Bureau of Statistics conducted last year and published yesterday.

Meanwhile, 42 percent of the Jewish population characterize themselves as secular, according to the poll, conducted among Jews over 20. Seventy-two percent said they had visited a synagogue over the previous year.

Among secular respondents, 24 percent reported that they had attended synagogue on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur or both. Among secular Jews, 26 percent said they had fasted on Yom Kippur, 17 percent build a sukkah and 82 percent regularly conduct a seder at Passover.

Some 67 percent of secular respondents light Hanukkah candles and 29 percent light Shabbat candles. Ten percent of secular respondents kept kosher over the year and 22 percent observed Jewish dietary laws - kashrut - during Passover.

Among secular and traditional respondents, 52 percent light Shabbat candles at home but only 11 percent refrain from traveling by car on Shabbat. The rate of kashrut observance among the two groups collectively is 48 percent during Passover and 33 percent during the year as a whole.

Some 21 percent, which would amount to 790,000 Jewish Israelis, are more religious than they had been in the past. About 14 percent are less religious.

Among adult male Israelis, 23 percent go to synagogue daily, and 25 percent do so only on Shabbat and/or holidays, 11 percent on Rosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur and 16 percent on special occasions such as celebrations for memorial prayers. Meanwhile, 24 percent don't visit a synagogue at all.

Among women, 31 percent go to synagogue on Shabbat and/or holidays, 16 percent only on Rosh Hashanah and/or Yom Kippur, 18 percent only on special occasions and 32 percent not at all.

I am an Evil Settler

(printed in Haaretz of all places)

How I became an evil settler

I am the 'other,' the archetype of Israeli evil. Otherness is the darling of people who love to hate. It allows people from any camp, left, right or center, to isolate themselves from certain people, turn them into an inhuman group and hate them without guilt or torment.

By Avinoam Sharon

I am a "settler." Because I am a settler, artists and members of the academic community - some of whom are my close friends - have decided to boycott my home. I am a settler, the archetypical Other of Israeli evil.

Otherness is the darling of people who hate. It allows people of every stripe, left, right and center, to dissociate from certain people as a dehumanized class without thought or regret, and to hate without pangs of guilt. Throughout history, Jews have played the role of Other. In the world community today,
Israel itself often plays the role of Other. Now I am the Other. I am the Other because I am a "settler," and in the eyes of some, that is what defines me.

How did I become this embodiment of all that is wrong and unjust?

When I married, I had hoped to continue to live in
Jerusalem, to raise my family in the city in which I had grown up. But the Israeli Government had different ideas. By the time I married, successive Israeli Governments - left and right - had pursued a policy of discouraging young couples from purchasing homes in the major cities, and of directing them to development towns and to the Territories. It was a policy that, for example, made it necessary for a young couple to put up as much as 60 percent of the purchase price of an apartment in cash in order to qualify for a mortgage or other housing loans, while providing free land and subsidized housing assistance of 85 percent and more of the cost of a home in "areas of national priority."

My wife and I did not want to live in an area of national priority. We didn't want to leave
Jerusalem. But after moving from one rented flat to another four times in five years, I wrote to the Minister of Housing. He replied. He advised me that generous incentives were available to those who moved to rural communities and to the Territories.

Like many in our situation, we began to look. We found a small community near the Green Line, overlooking
Ben-Gurion Airport - a settlement "in the national consensus." It was a community that had been built after the Government had convinced the Supreme Court that it was absolutely needed to serve vital interests of national security.

Despite the high-sounding pronouncements of the politically correct, greater legal minds than Oded Kotler, Zeev Sternhell, Cynthia Nixon and Mandy Patinkin (among them, the Israeli Supreme Court and the legal advisors of the U.S. Department of State and of the United Nations) had determined that there was nothing illegal about building my home. And even after the Government of the late prime minister Yitzhak Rabin announced a policy of "drying up" the settlements, my community continued to receive preferential loans, grants and generous incentives from his Government.

But things have changed. Negotiations for the establishment of a Palestinian state have turned me and my neighbors into political pawns. The security barrier now separates us physically from the State of Israel. The two policies have contributed to rendering my home a valueless asset, an economic trap - a prison. Yet, no Israeli government, left, right or center, has been willing to state what will become of me or of my neighbors.

Like most settlers, I am a Zionist. I believe that settling the
Land of Israel is about national self-determination. I believe - in true Zionist tradition - that Zionism is about Jewish national sovereignty in the Jewish homeland, not about its specific borders. I believe that the so-called "settler leaders" who declare their determination to remain in their communities even if they become part of a Palestinian state, represent a misguided minority that puts the Land of Israel before Jewish sovereignty. Their messianic view is not Zionism at all. It is a betrayal of Zionism.

A Zionist, by virtue of his ideals, must say that if the duly elected Government of the State of Israel has decided that a particular piece of territory is to be relinquished to another sovereign, or that a particular community does not serve the national interest, then he will move to a place where the Jewish national interest will be realized. The opposite statement is anti-Zionist.

Nevertheless, I am now dismissed as an irredeemable Other - unworthy of education, of culture and of support. I am condemned for my choices by those who have robbed me of choice. The signatories of the various petitions and supporters of the boycotts might bear in mind why I have become the object of their anger, hate and condemnation. It is because, like them, I dreamt and continue to dream of a better
Israel. It is because, by and large, we value the same ideals. So, when they accuse me, they should bear in mind that I am guilty only by association with them.

Partners

1.  Israel is suddenly awash with infantile pro-terror billboards erected by that cult of treason and capitulation calling itself the "Geneva Agreement."  This is a splinter group within the far Left in Israel, headed by Yossi Beilin, the godmother of the original Oslo accords.  Once Peres' right-hand – er, I mean left-hand - girl, he is now basically unemployed.

To put this into perspective, Beilin is today nominally part of Meretz, which is now down to three seats in the Knesset out of 120.  Beilin is a small minority figure even within Meretz, representing a Meretz faction so small he never made it into this Knesset.  Meanwhile, Beilin is the author of what he calls the "Geneva Understandings" – or what I prefer to call the Geneva Misunderstandings.  This is basically a "peace agreement" based on total Israeli capitulation to Palestinian demands, summed up in a document that was "negotiated" by Beilin with his terrorist pal Sari Nusseibah, the guy who currently heads the Al-Quds "university" for training terrorists.

Beilin passes himself off as "Doctor Beilin."  Except I am one of the few mammals who has actually read Beilin's "PhD thesis" (there is one in Haifa U's library).  It is a disgraceful collection of infantile meanderings about how the young idealists in the Labor Party need to take over the Labor Party.  Tel Aviv University gave Beilin his "PhD" for this, which tells you all you need to know about academic standards at Tel Aviv University.

Meanwhile, Beilin's gang of lemmings and terrorist partners have a new PR campaign that has blanketed all of Israel.  It consists of billboards showing pairs of Palestinian terrorists in a photo that resembles those greetings you get from Facebook people when they want to invite you to be their "friends."  (By the way, I do not have an active Facebook page, so apologies to all those who have invited me to be their "friend" and where I did not respond.)  The Beilin posters read "So and so" (name of a terrorist) wants to be your Partner (meaning peace partner).  The terrorists include Rajoub, Erekat, and others.

It goes without saying that Beilin did NOT put up any similar posters in Gaza or Ramallah or Jenin, with photos of Avigdor Lieberman or Bogie Ayalon proclaiming that THEY want to be partners.  You can see the posters from Beilin's fraternity prank campaign here: http://www.geneva-accord.org/ and  http://www.heskem.org.il/today-view.asp?id=2

Now what is even worse than this infantile high school attempt at leftist brainwashing is that it is being paid for by the US taxpayer!  That is right, as we revealed here a few days back, the US AID agency ponied up a quarter of a million smackers to give to Beilin to pollute Israeli highway billboards.

Hat tip to Yisrael Medad – I repost the news story:

USAID, an agency of the US Federal government, is spending $250,000 on outdoor billboards designed to convince Israelis that we have a 'peace partner'

Washington is funding an ad campaign in Israel featuring billboards of Palestinian officials asking: "We are partners -- what about you?"

The campaign launched Sunday includes the faces of senior Palestinian Authority officials Saeb Erekat, Jibril Rajoub and Yasser Abed Rabo, and Riad Malki, Palestinian foreign affairs minister, Yedioth Aharonoth said.

The aim of the campaign is to persuade Israelis that peace partners on the Palestinian side truly exist, and calls for support of a two-state solution, the Tel Aviv newspaper said.

The U.S. government was approached to fund the campaign by the Geneva Initiative founders, who drew up an agreement in 2003 to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the newspaper said.

The U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID, invested close to $250,000 toward the creation of the billboards, the newspaper said.

The campaign has raised a few eyebrows in Israel.

"We are talking about a Palestinian Authority campaign funded by the American government," an Israeli Foreign Ministry official was quoted saying.

But of course they're not sponsoring any that send the same message to the 'Palestinians.'

I haven't seen them yet, but then these billboards are far more likely to find a receptive audience in the Tel Aviv area than they would in Jerusalem where we have had more than enough up close and personal with the 'Palestinians.'

Does anyone believe them?

***

Now I do not have the energy to organize this myself but I wanted to toss out a suggestion for someone with some moxie who is willing to raise the funds needed – for an alternative Partner Poster billboard campaign.

First it would carry a big photo of Adolf Hitler with the slogan "I want you Jews to be partners with the Palestinians."   A similar one would feature Iran's Ahmedinijad.

Then we could have all the same Palestinian terrorist leaders now shown as partners inviting Israelis to be partners in carrying out the Second Holocaust and throwing of Jews into the sea.

You get the idea.

On David Irving:

3.    Hat tip to http://www.ibegtodisagree.com/2010/09/how-to-be-progressive-jew.html

In his important book "Trials of the Diaspora," Anthony Julius has a section on "oppositionist Jews." They are also, I think, Progressive Jews. This is what Julius writes about them: There has always been in Jewish circles the harshest self-criticism. These criticisms foster the taking of public stands by some Jews against their community or its established institutions. They often preface their criticisms with the phrase, 'As Jews, we …..', by impaction claiming to champion the 'true' Jewish perspective -- an embattled, minority position, for sure, calling for a certain moral heroism, and articulating fidelity to an idea of Jewishness, rather than more mundane solidarity with Jews. In modern times, they often deprecated Jewry's 'narrow-minded provincialism', 'narrow bigotry', 'religious intransigence', and so on -- what Bruno Bettelheim disparaged as 'ghetto thinking'. Some oppositionists have rather complex relations with Judaism that repay study; others are no better than posturers, without real knowledge or understanding of the religion. There are oppositionists who are prophetic excoriators of Israel, and they speak or write of of a love of Israel. There are an equivalent number (perhaps a greater number) of oppositionists, who lack that commitment, and are driven instead by embarrassment, fear, or a desire to ingratiate themselves with non-Jews or to distance themselves from their fellow Jews' reprehensible conduct -- or some combination of these motives. … Many oppositionist Jews have now taken up positions as scourges of the Jewish State. Out of perversity, some oppositionist Jews now place themselves in the company of anti-Semites.
